Field notes

Measure the connection in stages.

Separate the stages of a request before choosing what to change.

Start with a representative request.

Choose an action that reflects the issue users report. Record the network, destination, time and whether a connection is new or reused.

Keep the stages distinct.

Name resolution, connection establishment, secure negotiation, server response and transfer time answer different questions. A cached lookup or reused connection can remove work from a later request.

Compare the same conditions.

A single reading is a sample. Repeat the request, observe variation and compare another network where possible. Preserve the conditions with the result so a later comparison remains useful.

Practical takeaway

Write down the stage you expect a change to improve, then verify the application as a whole.
